Interstate Batteries Fights Hunger With the North Texas Food Bank
For the second time this year, Interstate Batteries® employees have worked hard to help crush hunger on behalf of the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB). In a recent food collection drive, Interstate workers collected more than 2,800 pounds of food donations in just one week.
“Interstate team members are not only a giving bunch, they’re a competitive bunch,” said Interstate Chaplain Henry Rogers. “This year, we kept tabs on which department led in donations, and by the third day, that competitive spirit to be Outrageously Dependable® at everything we do kicked in, and we had collection boxes overflowing with donations.”
To sweeten the deal, the Chaplain’s department, which is responsible for many of Interstate’s community outreach activities, offered Dallas Mavericks tickets to the person who donated the most items. Team member Kyle Magee donated 168 cans of food and won the contest. The giving spirit that permeates Interstate also led some employees to pool their money and hit big-box wholesalers to make their dollars go further in the food fight to fill the most boxes.
Earlier this summer, employees rolled up their sleeves to sort donations at the NTFB’s Dallas warehouse, preparing about 37,000 pounds of food for distribution to needy families across North Texas. In 2011, Interstate set a goal to collect 500 pounds of food, and surpassed that by collecting more than 1,700 pounds.
“Volunteering and supporting our fellow community members is something that has been woven into our corporate culture for many years,” Rogers said. “Every year, Interstate dedicates an entire month to volunteerism efforts and allows team members to participate while they’re on the clock. It’s just part of who we are as a company, and we’re happy to do it.”
