What You Need for Your Next Tailgate

November 30th, 2012 by

It’s conference championship weekend in college football, and if you’re one of those alumni who wants to outshine, outcheer and outtailgate your old college buddies, then read on. Interstate All Battery Center® can help you plan the most Outrageously Dependable® tailgate experience ever.

The essentials

Solaire Anywhere infrared grill

The Solaire Anywhere infrared grill heats up fast and cools down fast. It's also easy to clean.

Let’s start with the basics. That tiny charcoal grill of yours? It’s time for an upgrade. Charcoal is great, but the hassle and mess makes for a difficult tailgating experience. Consider a portable infrared grill, which offers plenty of searing power with much less cleanup. Most run on small propane tanks.

You’ll want cold beverages, right? The old ice chest is a proven warrior, but if you really want to take your tailgate to the next level, consider a portable refrigerator. With no ice to worry about, you’ll have more room for your favorite drinks.

The accessories

LED lighting panel

LED light panels create plenty of light while using relatively little energy. Avert your eyes when you flip the switch, though.

If your tailgate begins in the early morning hours (or if you’re partying right up to the start of a night game), you’ll need light. Sure, the headlights on your vehicle will brighten your surroundings, but for a truly brilliant experience, you’ll want a few LED light panels. They’re portable; they’re bright, and they sip electricity like a fine espresso.

Need your light a little more localized? Look for grill-mounted flashlights and magnet-mounted work lights at your local Interstate All Battery Center.

The power source

So you noticed many of our suggestions require electricity. Where will you plug in when you’re out in the middle of a parking lot of a big stadium? If your tailgating setup is relatively small, consider a power inverter, which will take the energy stored inside a deep-cycle battery and turn it into sweet, sweet AC electricity.

That’s fine if your tailgate lasts only an hour or two. If you plan on staying the day or multiple days (we don’t judge), you’ll want a solar panel and serious power storage. Check out the Goal Zero Yeti 1250 solar generator kit, available at Interstate All Battery Center. It offers the electricity of a gas-powered generator without the noise or fumes. And it recharges in the sun.

The backup plan

So you’ve tailgated all day, put away your toys and enjoyed the game. But maybe you didn’t use our Goal Zero Yeti or a power inverter with a dedicated Interstate battery, instead relying on your trusty car battery. And now, your car won’t start. Good thing you keep a portable jump pack in the trunk.
The lightweight QuickCable 900 makes jump-starting your car a breeze so you can get home and rest your voice. You’ll need it again for the bowl game in a couple of weeks.

Where to find your batteries and accessories

Before you pack for the tailgate this weekend, stop by Interstate All Battery Center to make sure you’ll have the power to get you through.

@KurtScherf Ha! Can't believe we forgot the TV/Satellite combo. Once we saw the infrared grill, that's about all we could think about.

I'd be curious about any affordable satellite TV offerings that would appropriate for tailgating. For example, I've heard about TracVision, but is that just a dish, or is it a service, too? Also, are there special recommendations for TVs that might be a little sturdier and easier to haul around to a tailgate? Any TV version of the Panasonic Toughbook, for example? I want to make sure that when my friend Billy gets drunk and starts whipping cornhole beanbags at everyone that he can't do too much damage to my sweet LED TV.
