Positive in Portland: Interstate Helps a Customer’s Mobility
Interstate® often hears that our batteries can help you out of a jam. Well, one customer told us that she wished she had an Interstate to help her out of traffic – literally.
A retired researcher from the University of Illinois, Elizabeth Weiss uses two wheelchairs: a high-end chair and an easy-to-travel-with chair from The Rascal Company®. When she’s not using her Rascal chair, she keeps it charged.
On a recent vacation to Portland, Ore., Elizabeth was getting worried something had gone wrong with her chair. The low-battery signal turned on too soon, the battery charged too fast and the chair ran too slow.
Things came to a head the day before her vacation ended when Elizabeth and a friend were crossing a four-lane highway – and her chair stalled.
“It was just a couple of minutes,” Elizabeth said. “But after that, [the chair] was slower. It couldn’t handle the curb cuts.”
When it comes to mobility batteries, friends in Illinois had recommended Interstate wheelchair batteries to her before her Portland trip.
“Someone said Interstate, and I recognized the name, but I hadn’t thought about it before,” she said. This time, she stopped by the Interstate All Battery Center in west Portland, asking team member Mel Hoff for a hand.
Mel ran a series of tests on Elizabeth’s batteries, discovering that one of her chair’s old batteries, while the right size, just couldn’t handle the chair’s power needs. The Portland store upgraded both of her batteries to Interstate’s deep-cycle mobility batteries – and even helped install them. Elizabeth’s errand meant she and her friend missed the opportunity to see Mount Hood, so Mel recommended another site, the Columbia River waterfalls.
“He really seemed to know what he was doing,” Elizabeth said, adding that with Mel’s help, Interstate “really saved the vacation for us. He took the time. He went the extra mile and did the extra checking. We appreciated that.”
Even after Elizabeth’s trip, the Portland store has come through for her. Weeks after her trip, she’s asked the Portland store for battery advice. Sales Associate Nancy Kraemer has taken her calls about deep cycling, voltage testing and more. Now, when Elizabeth hears friends have troubles with their wheelchairs, she recommends getting their batteries checked first. After all, the Interstate All Battery Center in Portland may have saved her the cost of a new chair.
“I can’t say enough nice things about the Portland team,” Elizabeth said.
