Finding an Interstate® battery under the hood of a truck may not be surprising, but what about 17 Interstate batteries under one hood? That’s what you’ll find in the Chevy S-10 electric truck modified by the students at the Pittsylvania County Career and Technical Center for the Electric Vehicle (EV) Challenge. Interstate All Battery Center of Danville, Va., provided the 17 Interstate SRM-27 batteries and battery storage boxes to the school at cost.

“The future of renewable energy is in the hands of great students like these,” said Bill Hetzel, owner of Interstate All Battery Center of Danville. “Portable power solutions will continue to be a part of that conversation. We believe projects like these have a significant positive impact on cultivating the science and engineering culture in our schools.”

The EV Challenge, April 12 – 14 in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., brings about 25 high schools from several states and includes multiple competitions, oral presentations and written exams. It was established 17 years ago for high school students to build real, full-size, plug-in electric vehicles in a year-long educational program and competition. The competition team is limited to six students, but more than 25 students have had a hand in building the truck. Students in the auto mechanics, welding, electrical and engineering programs have all worked on the vehicle, including freshmen through seniors.

“The road portion of the challenge includes an acceleration test, motocross and endurance challenge. The last one is of particular interest to us, because that challenge is where they run until the batteries quit,” said teacher and team leader Andy Nordon. “Our team is in their rookie year, so they are only allowed to compete with 96 volts. They intend to use the batteries in a series/parallel connection to get as much run time from their 96 volts as possible.”
