Guitar Just Adds to Celebrate Freedom Winner’s Collection
Austin Walker considers himself a Christian music superfan. So it's no surprise he circled June 29 on his calendar to make sure he attended the 23rd annual Celebrate Freedom music festival sponsored by Interstate Batteries and 94.9 FM KLTY in Dallas-Fort Worth.
Austin, 16, knew his favorite artists would be there, including Switchfoot, Toby Mac and Josh Wilson. But he didn't know he would eventually come home with an electric guitar signed by those artists.
The concert is the largest free outdoor music event in the country, annually drawing 80,000-100,000 fans to Southfork Ranch just north of Dallas. A sister concert is held on Labor Day weekend each year in Atlanta.
As title sponsor, Interstate Batteries wanted to reward a fan with something special, so we created a photo contest on Twitter and Instagram. To enter, concertgoers just needed to post a photo of themselves with the hashtag #InterstateFreedom.
Austin correctly thought creativity would get his entry noticed. So he posted a photo of himself next to the Interstate Batteries racecar. Then another one with one of our keychains. Then another photo. And another photo.
By the end of the day, Austin had posted 10 photos, each with an element of creativity.
A team from Interstate combed through more than a hundred entries to determine the winner, and two of Austin's entries got the most votes.
“I really wanted that guitar,” Austin said.
Austin built a tribute to all his favorite bands on his bedroom wall. Each band that played at Celebrate Freedom this year is represented with a CD cover, and each is autographed. He left a big spot in the middle for his new guitar.
“I'll never forget Celebrate Freedom and the fun I had that weekend,” he said. “And the guitar is awesome!”
