Team Interstate: A Top 10 and a Gold Medal
Kyle Busch, the driver of the No. 18 M&M’s Peanut Butter/Interstate Batteries Toyota), battled various handling issues throughout the GoBowling.com 400 on Sunday at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway but dug deep to preserve an eighth-place finish. It was his third consecutive top-10 result.
“We were just a little bit off today,” said Busch, who scored his seventh top-10 finish in 18 starts at Pocono. “It seemed like we could get going good on restarts, and it would drive well for a few laps, then we couldn’t keep up as well on the long run. That’s about all we had with our M&M’s Peanut Butter Camry. Dave (Rogers, crew chief) and the guys worked hard today, and we were able to get a top-10 out of a day that we were just a little behind.”
Motocross: Brayton Wins Gold
The Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross series took the weekend off, and Team Interstate’s Justin Brayton took full advantage.
Brayton refused to settle for what would have been his third Silver Medal in Moto X at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif. Instead he rallied after a brief setback and took the Gold Medal in dramatic fashion on the last lap in front of a thrilled crowd and a live worldwide ESPN television audience.
After qualifying fastest, Brayton began his heat race in fourth position. He quickly moved into third and then second with three laps to go. He caught and began to pressure the leader, but ran out of time and finished the heat in second.
In the main event, Brayton was battling for the lead by lap five. At the halfway point, Brayton tried to squeeze by on the tight track only to be aggressively blocked by the leader. He briefly fell back to fourth position but regrouped and charged ahead. On the last lap, Brayton made a bold move to take the win and the gold medal.
