Team Interstate‘s Mike Edwards grabbed his first win at Brainerd International Raceway and his fifth of the season on Sunday, extending his points lead and adding to an already stellar season.

This was Mike Edward's first-ever win in Brainerd.

This was Mike’s first-ever win in Brainerd.

Mike defeated Vieri Gaines in the final with a 6.629-second run, capping off a memorable day that also included wins against Greg Stanfield, Vincent Nobile and defending world champion Allen Johnson.

“Finally getting a win here is pretty special,” said Mike after earning his 39th career victory.

“I’m not sure, but I don’t think that I’ve ever been past the second round here before. We weren’t really that fast this weekend, but we managed to stick around, and I’m so proud of my guys because they really stepped it up. We had ignition problems during qualifying and really didn’t know if we had it fixed or not before today’s eliminations. We swapped ignition systems, engines, everything, but it worked out, so we’re happy.”

Kyle Busch, driver of the No. 18 Interstate Batteries Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, battled an ill-handling racecar, which led to two separate spins and resulted in a disappointing 31st-place finish in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.

“We were just off all day with our Interstate Batteries Camry,” said Kyle, who won the 2011 Pure Michigan 400.

“Our car was tight early in the race and it just kept getting worse and worse in traffic. We tried to pit for four tires there and get the handling better, but it put us back too far in traffic and we were just too loose coming off the corner, and I couldn’t hold onto it and backed it into the fence. We just had to try and hold onto it from there since we had too much damage to go anywhere.”
