Team Interstate: Matt, Kyle Earn Top 10s in Charlotte
Team Interstate’s Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch delivered strong top-10 finishes in Sunday night’s Coca-Cola 600 Sprint Cup Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. An unscheduled pit stop resulted in Denny Hamlin losing a lap to the leaders that he could never recover and a disappointing 22nd-place finish.
Matt led a total of four times for 33 laps during the season’s longest race, and a tremendous restart on lap 384 had him in the lead for the final green-flag run. Eventual race winner Jimmie Johnson reeled him in, however, and passed him for the lead with eight laps to go. Matt would finish third.
For Kyle, patience ruled the night. An accident in the final practice session on Saturday sent him to the back of the field for Sunday’s race, and he fell a lap down to the leaders early in the race. But steady driving and constant improvements by the No. 18 M&Ms/Interstate Batteries crew propelled Kyle back to the lead lap.
“The extra 100 miles definitely helped us tonight,” Kyle said. “We want to win, and it’s hard to be disappointed with a top-10 after the weekend we’ve had.”
