Kansas Speedway has never treated Kyle Busch particularly well, but Saturday night’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series 5-hour Energy 400 might just signal the beginning of a turnaround.

Kyle ran among the top five with 70 laps to go in his No. 18 Snickers/Interstate Batteries Toyota. But varying pit strategies, along with a long green-flag run to close out the race, netted him a 15th-place finish. Still, considering that accidents knocked Kyle out of the last three races at Kansas, he’ll use the finish as a springboard for the fall, which will count in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

“We had a goal of learning some things and finishing within the top-15 with our Snickers Camry this weekend,” Kyle said. And by that measurement, the No. 18 team succeeded. Crew chief Dave Rogers added a lot of handling information to his notebook and made a few gutsy calls to gain track position. The 15th-place finish gives them something to build on.

Kyle’s Team Interstate companions Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin finished 10th and 18th, respectively. Jeff Gordon won the race.
