Team Interstate: Carl Flips the Script for a Win
When a caution came out with 64 laps to go in the Coca-Cola 600, Darian elected to bring Carl down pit road for four tires and fuel, knowing that if the race stayed green to the end, Carl would have to slow down and save a lot of fuel with his No. 19 Toyota.
It was a bold gamble, and it paid off with Carl’s first win since joining Team Interstate. It was also Toyota’s 300th NASCAR victory.
“It’s so cool to get this win—we’ve had such bad luck,” Carl said. “This is truly a gift. I took advantage of it to win, and we’ll get better.”
Kyle proves his strength in return
The Coca-Cola 600 is a test of endurance for both car and driver, and Team Interstate’s Kyle Busch proved up to the challenge.
In his first points race since returning from injuries suffered the first week of the season, Kyle wheeled his No. 18 Skittles/Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry into the top 10 and stayed near the front all night. Had the fuel-mileage gamble gone his way instead of Carl’s, Kyle probably would have finished no worse than fifth. Instead, he finished 11th.
“That’s disappointing,” Kyle said. “But sometimes you do win these things by fuel mileage races, so congratulations to our teammates, Carl and Matt (Kenseth). They finished up front there.”
Kyle said he felt good after 600 miles and looks forward to contending for wins quickly.
“I can’t say enough about everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing and just all of our partners that have stuck behind me, with Skittles here and M&M’s Crispy, SNICKERS, Pedigree, Interstate Batteries and Toyota,” he said. “Everyone pulling for me and cheering for me and helping me get back into this racecar, and to get out there and have a strong run means a lot.”
