Team Interstate: Kyle Gains Points with Top 10 at Bristol
An eighth-place finish Saturday night gave Team Interstate‘s Kyle Busch more of a points cushion heading into the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship, but a late penalty denied what could have been another victory.
Kyle proved to have the car to beat all night, leading four times for a race-high 192 laps. But on lap 342 of the 500-lap race, he felt what he thought was a loose wheel and dove down pit road. The unscheduled pit stop put him two laps down.
With fresh tires, he was able to make up one lap under green. He then caught a break when the caution flag waved on lap 359, enabling him to stay out while most of the rest of the field pitted, putting him back on the lead lap.
Kyle methodically moved his Skittles/Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry up to third when the caution waved again on lap 430. But as he pitted on the following lap, he was posted for speeding on pit road and sent to the tail end of the longest line with 62 laps to go. With no caution during the final 62-lap run to the checkered flag, Kyle was never able to regain the track position lost, and he had to settle for an 8th-place finish.
“We had a really good Skittles Camry, especially on the shorter runs,” Kyle said. “It was just a shame we had the penalty there at the end. You lose the track position that close to the end and it’s hard to make up. We had a better car than our finish showed, but we’ll move on to Darlington in a couple of weeks and keep gaining the points we need to put ourselves in position to make the Chase.”
Joey Logano won the Irwin Tools Night Race.
