Team Interstate: Matt Wins; Kyle Gains Valuable Points
Team Interstate continues to set a blistering pace this summer, and the wins are stacking up.
Matt Kenseth won Sunday’s race at Michigan International Speedway, while the rest of Team Interstate finished no worse than 11th.
Matt, Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch qualified for the race in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th, respectively, serving notice to the field early on that they weren’t about to release their stranglehold on the competition.
Although Kyle qualified his No. 18 Interstate Batteries Toyota in the sixth position, he crashed in practice on Saturday, forcing him to a backup car. That meant he would start from the rear of the field on Sunday.
He didn’t stay there long. He worked his way up to 20th by lap 30 and cracked the top 10 by lap 58. He made it to the top five by lap 77 of the 200-lap race and stayed near there as various pit strategies unfolded.
“If all things would have worked out a little better, we might have finished fourth or fifth,” Kyle said after the race. “We just have to continue on with our points gathering and go on to next week.”
Around 300 Interstate Batteries hospitality guests attended the race, as did Chairman Norm Miller, who celebrated in Victory Lane with Matt.
